Marmottoloidi, Biennale Gherdëina 9, Ortisei
Atelier dell’Errore presents Marmottoloidi @ The Parliament of Marmots: The 9th Biennale Gherdëina curated by Lorenzo Giusti, Marta Papini (associate curator), May 31 - September 1, 2024
This site-specific exhibition, inspired by the mythological tales of the Ladin valley of the Dolomites, is articulated through a large-scale sculptural work as well as a series of drawings and paintings - the most recent experimentation in our practice.
AdE_Vela_Alpina (2024), a sculptural “sail”, hangs at the exterior of the exhibition. This is the second sail created by AdE: our first, AdE_Vela_Rapido (2024), debuted during the opening of the 60. La Biennale di Venezia. AdE_Vela_Alpina presents a vascular, marine-like creature presented on an iridescent surface composed of isothermal rescue blankets. A red rope connects the work to the adjacent interior space. AdE_Vela_Alpina is both the marker of AdE’s installation, but also a reminder of the ancient geological history of the area, once dominated by the sea.
On the second floor of the building, the headquarters of the Biennale was emptied, allowing AdE to transform the space into a kingdom of marmot-like creatures, or Marmottoloids. Conceived as a kind of extended family, the works present a constellation of archetypes, from the common marmot to more celestial divinities. The Divine PINK PUNK (2024), a hybrid female divinity of monumental scale, breaks through the paneled ceiling, dominating the surrounding environment.
MARMOT PUNK, (2018-2024), chosen by the curators as the guiding image of the entire Biennale, is placed at the center of the installation, while on the perimeter walls further “Marmottoloids” are presented: XIPE TOTEC (2024), an imagined creature from Andean mountains or the Amon Sinaitica (2024), a luminescent Egyptian deity. To conclude the exhibition, AdE presents several preparatory works in their original steel trays, AdE’s first experimentation of the dripping technique, taken to a large-scale with the Divine PINK PUNK.
